Dear Andrew,
Network bandwidth is a shared resource, so the utilization by any
user can impact every other user. Over the past several years the
amount of bandwidth used by the campus residence halls (ResNet)
to the Internet has increased to the point where some students
have experienced difficulty using ResNet for academic purposes.
To improve the performance of ResNet for all students, OIT
and the Duke Student Government have agreed to limit the per user
bandwidth off campus to a maximum of 5 gigabytes per day.
You may be surprised to know that your computer (00:c0:9f:ab:2e:3b) is
over this limit and is one of the top users of bandwidth in the
residence halls. Yesterday, your computer sent 5.07 gigabytes
of data to computers off campus. This is compared to the average
of 0.07 gigabytes.
We recognize that you might be unaware that you are using this much
bandwidth. This is because many programs make it difficult to truly
shut them off and they continue to run after you believe they were
closed. If you require assistance in identifying strategies to keep
your bandwidth usage below the permitted limit, you can visit the website:
http://www.oit.duke.edu/helpdesk/filesharingYou have received 0 notice(s) of excessive bandwidth
utilization. If you continue to use bandwidth at your current rate,
you run the risk of receiving additional notices. After your fifth
notice, your computer's outbound bandwidth will be restricted to 64 kbps;
approximately the speed of a dialup modem.
If you have an academic need for more than 5 GB of bandwidth per day,
please send email describing your situation to
bandwidth-usage@duke.edu.
If you have questions about your bandwidth usage, you can contact the
OIT Help Desk at 684-2200.
Sincerely,
Office of Information Technology
